The Cubby House" Farmstay is set on 1030 acres of pasture improved and natural bushland overlooking the picturesque Capertee Valley "The Widest Valley In The World!" at 1100m above sea level providing a pleasant, fresh climate and therefore avoids the high summer heats of more western areas. We are situated a comfortable 3½ hours drive North West of Sydney off the Castlereagh Highway/B55 in scenic Running Stream.
I have pleasure in sharing my farm including sheep, cattle, goats, chooks, ducks, bushwalking, or just to enjoy magnificent views surrounded by spectacular sandstone cliffs and a variety of wildlife, birds and native flora. (Roos, Wombats, Echidna, Tree Ferns, Rock Lillys, etc.) You will experience the perfect environment for relaxation during your stay. "The Cubby House" is also ideal for photography, landscape painting, bird watching and star gazing. There are no set activities.
Seeing is believing. These pictures don't do this awesome view justice.
"The Cubby House" is a beautifully presented 3 bedroom cottage which accommodates up to 9 people and is privately set near the main farmhouse. The cottage is airconditioned and open plan with spacious lounge and dining area, country style kitchen, full bathroom facilities and verandah surrounds the cabin. I only take one group at a time so book early to avoid disappointment. Especially in holiday periods.
It is self-contained with just about every modern convenience provided. (Bath, Shower, Washing Machine, Iron, Stove/Oven, Refrigerator/Freezer, Kitchen Utensils, Microwave, Digital TV/DVD/VHS/CD, BBQ, Hairdryer, High Chair, Cot, Wood Heater, Firewood Supplied, Air Conditioning, Fans, Books, Games, Linen, Towels, Pillows, Doonas, Blankets and Complimentary Tea, Coffee, Sugar, Milk, Biscuits, Eggs, Shampoo/Conditioner, Soap, Toothpaste.)
I suggest you bring enough food with you for your stay before you get to Running Stream. Nearest General Store for emergency supplies is IGA Kandos 38km, Lithgow and Mudgee approx. 70km away. Closest Restaurants/Take Aways/Hotel are in Running Stream 8km, Capertee 25km or Kandos/Rylstone 38km..
The bedrooms consist of 1 king size bed in main bedroom and 2-3 single beds in each of the other 2 bedrooms. (Single Beds can be put together to make a king size bed if preferred. A cot is available on request. Advise at time of booking. Cottage sleeps up to 9 people. Only the right number of beds are made for your booking so please advise if you require a king and/or single at time of booking so that the right number of beds can be made ready for your arrival.
All you require to bring with you is food, drinks and clothing for all seasons and suitable closed in shoes for the farm, preferably not white because red dirt will stain.
Our local "Farm View" Cafe at Running Stream is now open for business Thursday to Sunday and Public Holidays. Next best/closest place to eat out or emergency supplies is the Capertee Royal Hotel/Capertee Service Station/RSL Kandos/The Globe Hotel Rylstone/IGA Kandos.
There are many scenic drives within an hours drive. In brief, things you should know as follows: my Farmstay was established in 2005. It overlooks the Capertee Valley which is known to be the largest enclosed canyon in the world (wider, but not as deep as the Grand Canyon USA) and is located to the East of the Great Dividing Range off the Castlereagh Highway half way between Lithgow and Mudgee. The Capertee Valley also is home to some 236 species of birds and holds the record for the highest number of birds per square kilometre than anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere and 10% of Australia's biodiversity in a world heritage listed area. The accommodation is first class and everything you could wish for is provided, including a gas barbeque. I offer comfortable accommodation and a cosy cottage, with quality beds and super warm doonas. The fireplace in the loungeroom is set and ready for action with kindling and firewood provided nearby for ongoing use. The regular customers particularly value "the most magnificent views in Australia, great bushwalking, wildlife, natural fauna, bird life, etc. and the chance to enjoy real peace and tranquility. It is a wonderful place to get away from it all".
Please note that mobile phone reception and Wireless Broadband is limited to the Telstra Next G Network and some new Digital Optus Network. If you have Vodaphone you may find a signal as you walk around the farm, however, it does not work at the cottage itself.
Various rock formations can be found on the property, some depicting sillhouettes, teapots, etc. Let your imagination run wild.

GUEST REVIEWS -
Just one of the shots of a sunrise with the valley carpeted in cloud taken by Margaret - May 2010.
DEC 2011 DARREN - Recommended. We loved "The Cubby House" We had a great time exploring the property and surrounds and our daughter had the most wonderful time with all the animals and loving the farmlife. Wonderful hosts make for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. (And great home made Raspberry Jam!)
JAN 2012 NEVILLE - Recommended. Margaret's owner built Cubby House presents very well overall with a number of pros and cons, as do most farmstay cabins. Valley views from the veranda, spacious internals, an abundance of firewood, And then there is their 11 year old son. Daniel. What a charmingly articulate, knowledgeable and polite young man. A thoroughly likeable young gentleman who adds real value to one's stay.
OCT 2012 LORNA - Recommended. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cubby House. It is a fantastic property. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.
JAN 2013 JESS - Recommended. My partner, myself and our 3 year old son extremely enjoyed our 1 week stay at The Cubby House in Running Stream. The log cabin they milled themselves and has absolutely every comfort and luxury you would need and expect in a hotel/Inn. The best part was overlooking the Capertee Valley from the windows and lighting up a fire to keep us warm and cosy at night even during summer season! Oh and the star gazing on clear skies at night!!!. We enjoyed the sheep shearing, the truck ride through the bushland exploring nature, looking at fossils and also the hundreds of cattle, sheep, horses, chickens, ducks they had roaming across their pastures. The produce was fresh and yummy! We had lots of time to explore and experience tours the surrounding mining towns in Rylstone, Kandos, the wineries in Mudgee, museums in Bathurst and Western Plain Zoo in Dubbo. Dunns swamp was amazing to easily hire a kayak and enjoy travelling along large pristine waters or laze back on the sandy banks. Margaret and the kids were extremely hospitable, knowledgeable and a pleasure to deal with. We are going there again without a doubt to forget about the rat race of a life we are living.
JAN 2013 JOHN - Recommended. Our family's first holiday as a family - 2 adults and 2 boys aged 3 and 4.5. Margaret made us feel so very very welcome and the cottage is very cosy and has all the conveniences you will need. Make sure you bring food. The place is incredible and beyond description. Our youngest loved all the animals (us grown-ups enjoyed that too). Our older son loved visiting all the great towns in the area including Hill End and Gulgong. We will be back!
FEB 2013 IRENE & CHRIS - Recommended. What an outstanding place we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. This was our second visit and it was great. Margaret is a great host and nothing is too much of a bother . She makes you feel like you are one of the family which is very nice and welcoming. All the animals are very friendly and don't seem to worry if you walk around them at all. The views are breathtaking and you can't get enough of them, we spent quite a bit of time on the verandah just watching the clouds drift by imagining you are in another world. Always remember though to take some warm clothes because the weather can change at the drop of a hat.
FEB 2013 DAVID - Recommended. This is our 3rd visit so it speaks volumes and definitely won't be our last. As per many previous guests comments. Margaret is the most hospitable and down to earth host we've met and her 2 children are marvelous as well. Everything needed for a comfortable stay is provided including a BIG jar of biscuits and 12 fresh farm eggs. The peace, tranquility and views are only some of the highlights of The Cubby House. Do yourselves a favour and book a weekend away and I am sure you would be going back!
MAR 2013 ALBERT - Recommended. The travel instructions were accurate and easy to follow. We were welcomed to The Cubby House with a lovely bunch of flowers on the table. Our hosts were helpful and gracious. This is the neatest, cleanest cottage we have ever stayed in. It is roomy, very comfortable and there is a nice big bathroom. The view is out of this world, we could not stop looking at the beautiful valley. We could not have wished for better. The night sky is brilliant for anyone interested in astronomy or stargazing. The bathing ducks created hilarious entertainment. We will certainly be back as soon as possible.
MAR 2013 BRETT - Recommended. I would like to personally recommend this wonderfull farmstay, my family had a excellent time enjoying the world class scenery, animals and hospitality !!! those fresh eggs taste amazing. Many thanks Margaret.

MAY 2013 GRAEME & STELLA - Recommended. For a retired couple who needed a break, the Cubby House was ideal. We found it comfortable, well equipped, quiet (except for a confused rooster), interesting and the view over the Capertee Valley (especially at sunrise and sunset) was simply breathtaking. My camera went into overdrive. The hosts were friendly and kind and thoughtful for our welfare. You really do need your own transport to get there and explore the area. We enjoyed visiting Kandos and Rylstone and had a great afternoon at Dunns Swamp. Oh, and pack your warm woolies! Highly recommended.
JUNE 2013 GARRY - Recommended. We have been guests at this property twice and have found it a fantastic place to have a "value for money" quiet break. The hosts are very friendly and go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
JULY 2013 AMY - Recommended. We had a relaxing and invigorating visit to the Cubby House. Thank you for your hospitality, the warm fire, the truck ride and the goat fashion-parade. Unforgettable.
AUG 2013 KATE - Recommended. The Cubby House was amazing. Our first morning we saw it snow and it was magical. The kids loved collecting the eggs and feeding the baby goat Wally. Margaret was so hospitable. The accommodation was very cosy and comfortable with plenty of wood to keep the fireplace burning. We will definitely be back. See you again real soon!
OCT 2013 SUNNY - Recommended. Kia ora I loved the quiet and peacefulness at The Cubby House farm. It was awesome waking up to a beautiful morning sunrise at Eagle View. Daniel, Clare and Wally: thanks for the amazing show - you guys are so talented and creative. We are both grateful for everything. Cheers Sunny and Justin. Aroha nui.
MAY 2014 - RON - WOW! The tranquillity that lays like a blanket on The Cubby House was rudely broken by our 2 grand children when they spotted the farmyard animals on our first morning. From that point on during our 10 day stay they talked incessantly about the animals whilst us, the adults, shared countless cuppas and refreshing beverages taking in the magnificence of the view. Hand feeding horses, goats, chicken and ducks was a new experience for our little takers. Margaret was a marvellous host. Must not forget the delightful Clare who was a great host too! To quote a well known actor "we will be back!."
JUNE 2014 NAPOLEON - Solitary Splendour. Our stay at Cubby House in May 2014 was the third trip there with friends. That should say it all. We keep visiting the place for its location, high up in the hills, away from all the hustle and bustle and in with nature at its best. There is no quieter place if you want to relax than The Cubby House. Its comfortable and its clean. The owners are lovely people too. Walk through the bush or be taken on a bumpy ride around the property..its an experience. You'll want to go there again...and again!
JUNE 2014 WANDA - Peaceful with spectacular views. Had all the family together with the grandchildren for a long weekend at The Cubby House. Although the weather was cool outside it was lovely and warm with the fire going. The little ones enjoyed exploring the property and feeding the animals. Thank you for your hospitality.
JULY 2014 LISA - Fantastic hospitality! This was our third visit to The Cubby House and once again, it was fantastic. Margaret's hospitality is wonderful and the views from the property are unbelievable. The most relaxing week I've had in a while. We'll certainly be back again!
AUG 2014 BLACK FAMILY - My family and I have had several short breaks away from the rat race and reality but our stay at The Cubby House was by far the best so far. Margaret is such a nice person with a heart of Gold. Our stay was educational for us and our children, adventurous, peaceful and relaxing. The only problem we found was that we hadn't stayed long enough. Thank you Margaret, and your children Daniel and Clare for generosity, sharing your beautiful farm and wonderful Cubby House with my family. I am sure my children Bella and Ben will never forget their time your farm. All the best and we look forward to the day when we return.
AUG 2014 KAREN AND STEVE - An outstanding place to stay. We had a wonderful, relaxing time at The Cubby House. It is highly recommended to those who want wonderful scenery, excellent hosts, the experience of farm animals (including their babies) and peace and quiet from the hectic day to day life. This place is great!
OCTOBER 2014 MICHAEL - Awesome spot! Absolutely beautiful property with amazing views. Margaret is a fantastic host and thank you for your hospitality.
NOVEMBER 2014 NANCY AND DON - Excellent property. Comfortable and well equipped house and interesting property that caters for a variety of needs and interests. The four distinct walking tracks provide an excellent opportunity to explore the large property and fantastic views are to be had from several points on the farm. Geographically very accessible being just a few KM from a main highway.
MARCH 2015 JOHN - Fantastic views. For peace and quiet and for amazing views of Capertee Valley this is the place to be. The farm setting and the friendly host make it even better with wedge-tail eagles adding further attraction for bird-watchers. The Cubby House itself, as its name suggests, is not five-star luxury but it is comfortable enough for a couple (like us) or for a family. For the energetic there are some great walks to various lookouts.
